This member of the mint family has a strong scent and even stronger reputation for keeping evil away.

Medicinal Uses: Hyssop inhibits the herpes virus (Herpes simplex). It also loosens phlegm in the chest, making it a treatment for colds and flu. Externally, burns and bruises can be treated with hyssop.

Spiritual Uses: Hyssop is another one of those herbs that has been used through the centuries to purify and drive away evil.

Hyssop has been naturalized to the Eastern half of the US coming originally from Eurasia. It is a perennial shrubby plant that grows up to 2 feet tall. The stems are stiff and the leaves are narrow. The purple-blue flowers will appear in the late summer and grow in clusters on one side of the plant.
